Agronomy: Expert Advice for High-Yielding Soybeans Pt. 2

As winter comes to a close, growers across Illinois have planting on their minds. From weed control to seed selection to double-crop beans, are you trying anything different in 2015?
Experts at the 2015 Soybean Summit in Effingham, Ill., presented their top advice for high-yielding soybeans, including planting decisions, management, weed control and double-crop rotations.

Breakout Session: Palmer Amaranth and Waterhemp Don’t Care that Commodity Prices Are Lower
Palmer amaranth and waterhemp resistance to glyphosate continues to spread across Illinois and other Midwestern states. Bryan Young, associate professor of weed science with Purdue University, shares tips for farmers to stop the spread to their farm operations, including how to create a management strategy to challenge weed species early, costing less time and effort than postemergence rescue applications.
Breakout Session: What Seed Treatments Should You Be Selecting?
In just a few years, soybean seed treatments have become the new normal, with active ingredients targeting seed and seedling diseases, nematodes and insects. Listen as Jason Bond, associate professor at Southern University of Illinois-Carbondale, summarizes the current soybean pathogen threats, the products that are currently on the market and how these products vary in effectiveness.
Breakout Session: Managing for High-Yield Soybeans in Southern Illinois
Improvements in soybean genetics, crop-protection solutions and soybean management techniques along with advancements in biotechnology are contributing to increased gains in soybean yields. Randy McElroy, technology development representative with Monsanto, reviews the yield components of soybeans, discusses the variables that soybean growers can control to target high soybean yields, explains inputs and management to lessen soybean stress and looks at an overall cropping system approach to soybean production in southern Illinois.
Breakout Session: Developing a Solid Double-Crop Soybean Production Program
Kelly Robertson, CCA, explains the difference between planning to plant double-crop soybeans and having a plan on how to manage double-crop soybeans. He shows how developing a systems approach can help growers position themselves for success on the often neglected crop.
