Weed Control Using The Enlist Herbicide System

It has been said that “weeds and cockroaches are the only things that could survive a nuclear war.” When it comes to weeds, there is no doubt they have become increasingly challenging to control and they continue to adapt to the cultural and chemical practices that farmers use. Over the years, weeds have developed resistance or at least tolerance to many of the classes of chemistry; new and old. For that reason, Ag research companies have continued to innovate and try to stay ahead of the ever-changing weed landscape.

The Enlist herbicide system has recently come to the market and brought with it a new strategy to fight and control weeds. As with any new technology, there are a lot of questions around the proper use of the chemical and any restrictions that are stated on the herbicide label. I will answer a few of the most common questions in the attached tables.

Many of the first questions are around who can apply the herbicide and when it can be applied.

Another common question is around application buffers and what products can be tank-mixed in the Enlist system.

By following the label guidelines and applying responsibly, this herbicide system will offer growers the opportunity to have clean fields.

As with any system there are a few other key points to remember.

  1. It is important to use a recommended rate of a pre-emerge/residual herbicide to limit the amount and size of the weeds that need to be controlled in post emerge applications.
  2. Weed size matters. Controlling weeds at the 2-4” size will help ensure this technology lasts for many years to come. Nothing builds resistance faster than trying to control big weeds that are often hard to kill.
  3. Layering residual herbicides with post applications will again keep weed populations to a minimum and suppress late flushes of weeds.

Consult with your local chemical supplier or manufacturer rep for any additional questions or clarification of any label guidelines.
